SKÅDIS bin printing, answered

Everything people ask before their first custom bin: what to print with, what the generator can do, and what MakeBins costs.

Printing

What material should I print SKÅDIS bins in?

PLA is fine for indoor storage and the easiest to print. PETG holds up better around heat, sunlight and oily workshop parts. Both work with the generated geometry.

Do the hooks need supports?

Print with proper support settings: tree supports work well, and thick supports if the bin is tall. We also suggest a high infill. Ready-made printing profiles you can import into your slicer are on the way.

The hooks fit too tight. What do I do?

Check the first layers before anything else: elephant foot is the usual cause, and most slicers can compensate. Do not scale the STL, that stretches the hooks too. If a dimension is wrong, change it in the designer and download again.

How strong are printed bins?

Plenty for storage. Walls default to 3 mm and are adjustable from 1.6 to 10 mm; go thicker for heavy contents like bolts.

The tool

What file format do I get?

STL, generated server-side from the exact parametric model you previewed. Watertight, manifold, ready to slice.

Can I set any size I want?

Width 20 to 300 mm, height 20 to 200 mm, depth 20 to 150 mm, in real millimetres. Compartments up to 8 columns by 8 rows, with per-compartment sizing.

Which boards are supported?

IKEA SKÅDIS in 36 × 56, 56 × 56 and 76 × 56 cm, plus custom board sizes. More pegboard systems are planned, and Pro users get each new one first.

Do I need an account?

No. Open the designer and start. Your work is saved in your browser.

Is my design private?

Yes. Designs are saved in your browser, not in an account. The server receives only the numbers needed to generate each preview and STL, and keeps no record of your design. If you leave your email for the founding price, that email is the only thing we store.

Pro & pricing

Is MakeBins free?

Yes. The core designer is free forever, not a trial: design custom bins, preview them in 3D and download print-ready STLs. During the beta the Pro power features (multi-board designs, download-all) are free too; when the beta ends, those become a one-time Pro unlock.

What will Pro cost after the beta?

Pro is a one-time $15 unlock for lifetime access, no subscription. The core designer stays free. Leave an email during the beta (in the designer or on the home page) and you lock in a $9 lifetime price for Pro instead.
